Alma del Mar is a K-8 charter school whose mission is to put every one of our scholars on the path to college and to challenge them to be service-minded leaders. We do this by immersing our scholars in a highly demanding, highly supportive environment where they receive a content–rich education.
Alma gets results for kids. After fewer than three years at Alma, our scholars outperform their district peers in reading ability and surpass their suburban peers in mathematics achievement. In addition, we’re known for being a highly inclusive school. Over 30% of scholars at Alma receive some additional academic or behavioral support and we have been nationally recognized for our effectiveness in serving this population.
The Lead Teacher Role
Lead teachers are the core of Alma’s crew. Our lead teachers work in teams to make sure that every scholar in their grade level achieves at high levels and develops the habits they will need to succeed. Lead teachers are auteurs, creative leaders who stop at nothing to ensure that their scholars’ learning experience is truly powerful.
As a Lead Teacher you will plan and teach highly effective lessons, work as part of a grade level and curricular team and develop high leverage relationships with Alma families. You’ll receive the support you need in all aspects of your work, while retaining the autonomy to do what’s right for the scholars with whom you work closely every day. While some successful lead teachers have chosen to remain in this role indefinitely, others have gone on after two or three years to take on curriculum, management, culture, operations or development roles at Alma or with like-minded organizations.
The Associate Teacher Role
Our Associate Teacher role is designed to give talented individuals new to the teaching profession a hands-on introduction to the craft. Associate Teachers will serve as part of a grade-level team, working in collaboration with and under the guidance of experienced Lead Teachers. Associate Teachers will take on increasing responsibility for lesson planning and lead teaching as the year progresses. They will receive ongoing professional development and frequent, targeted feedback and coaching. The content areas and instructional roles of each Associate Teacher varies depending on the time of year, the needs of our scholars and the approach of each teaching team. While most Associate Teachers go on to take Lead Teaching roles, some prefer to stay in this supporting role for the long term.
